Heart-shields are your margin for error in the Veil, and the Vital Heart is the only way to put them back. You carry three equipped at most, you start the run with all three, and —this is the part almost nobody accounts for— they do not regenerate on their own: every bad event takes one and there it stays until you buy another. An adventurer with three hearts and one with none are playing the same game under different rules: the first can risk one more expedition, the second is betting 20% of their purse on every event.

Dawn Vale
Essence
Khron is a design decision, not a quirk: Essence is what feeds the Workshop, so every heart you buy is a piece of progression you are not spending on better gear. That is its real price, and it is why it stings more than it looks.
