The Breeze Echo is Dawn Vale's rare track find: the first time your compass brings back something that isn't a Faint Echo, it's this. It drops rarely — a 31% chance per find with Mundane gear — and in smaller amounts than a common, but it's the key to the whole opening: no Breeze, no Refined compass, and no Portal to the Umbral Forest. It sells for 20 Khron, and selling it early is selling the journey.
Only by tracking in Dawn Vale, and as a rare: each of an outing's 3 finds has a 31% chance of rolling rare with the Mundane compass and 40% with the Refined, and rares drop at 3/4 the amount of a common.
In a hurry, the Aromatic Lure adds +30% rare chance and one extra find that outing, and the Veil Sextant leaves one rare unit behind on outings that were about to come back empty. The day-7 Bonfire of the Journal also gifts 1 rare from your realm: in the first, this or an Ancestral Bone.
It governs the game's first two tolls. The Refined compass asks for 36 (with 97 Faint Echo and 32 Carved Stone); the Portal to the Umbral Forest asks for 52; and — here's the surprise — the Portal to the Dunes of Oblivion asks for 44 more, even though you already live on the second continent.
The curve is calibrated that way on purpose: Portal 1 is measured to land at 2 hours of play and Portal 2 at 3, and the Refined «has to be done around 1.4h» because Portal 2 requires it. In practice you need 132 in total between recipe and portals, so the Breeze left over after crossing isn't surplus: it's the down payment on the next toll.
Its odds were lowered on purpose. In the 20-hour curve [sixfled 2026-08-01] the tier-1 rare chance went from 0.35 to 0.31 and tier 2 from 0.44 to 0.40: «less of a gift in the zones where the player was already cruising». The jump the game rewards is tier 3 (0.53 → 0.58), the one the endgame is ground with.
Don't sell it to pay for the Refined: the recipe costs 7,800 Khron and each Breeze sells for 20, so you'd need 390 in Khron alone when 36 in material open the door. And mind which way trade runs: the Wanderer buys materials, he doesn't sell them. Any Breeze you lack comes from Dawn Vale or from a deal with another player, never from a shelf.
Don't cross Portal 1 with an empty bag: the Breeze doesn't drop in the Umbral Forest, and Portal 2 will ask you for 44.
